Malayali directors complete Kannada movie during pandemic; set to release in theatres......

Kochi: Two Malayali advertising directors have turned filmmakers amid the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown. Overcoming all challenges, the duo is all set to release their Kannada movie in theatres.

Arun Kumar and Sabu Aloysius are the two directors who made their debut in Kannada film industry. They also announced three new movies overcoming the COVID crisis. Though the directorial debut faced many challenges due to the lockdown, they were confident to make their signature in the film industry.

“At first, we planned to remake the Malayalam movie ‘Helen’ in Kannada. We have initiated all works to complete the formalities for the project. Though we scheduled the Pooja ceremony on March 27, lockdown imposed on March 24 interrupted the project,” said the directors.

“Later, we planned to make a movie through OTT release. Discussions on the movie were concluded on the theme ‘Life is Beautiful’. We started shooting on September 4. On the 13th day of the shoot, the whole crew tested positive for COVID-19. Around 14 people were in the set. Though the shooting was interrupted for almost one and a half month, we completed shooting,” they added.

The filmmakers are excited about the theatrical release of their movie in January as they did not expect it and planned for an OTT release.

Priyanka Upendra to star in Pruthvi Ambaar's Life is Beautiful

Priyanka Upendra is all set to play mentor to  Pruthvi Ambaar in the upcoming flick Life is Beautiful. “It’s the first film I’m shooting after lockdown,” says Priyanka, adding, “I’ve played a gamut of roles earlier, but H Lohit has offered me a character that’s unlike anything I’ve done until now. I play Caroline and my relationship with Pruthvi’s character is very interesting. It’s a feel good film and has so many layers to it.”

Lohith says that it’s his rapport with Priyanka that made him cast her in the film. “She’s such a consummate actor and this is my third film with Priyanka ma’am after Mummy and Devaki. She just gets into the skin of any character I give her and I was sure that only she’d be able to breathe life into this role. We’ve already shot 50% of the film and it’s such an emotional journey for all us, because the subject itself is so high on feelings just like the title says,” sums up Lohith. The movie is being directed by Arunkumar M and Sabu Aloysius and has music by Nobin Paul.

Directors’ strategies on resuming shoots

Many Kannada films were halted during shoot, and some right after being announced, due to the lockdown. With the Unlock 1.0 in progress, discussions about resuming film shoots have begun. However, the challenges and changes that await filmmaking are many.

Metrolife spoke to a few directors who have projects that have been stalled.

Pannaga Bharana, who directed ‘Happy New Year’, says that these times demand for story-oriented films rather than larger-than-life concepts.

The echo lives on

BENGALURU: Going down memory lane, Kim Ki-duk, aka Kim Ki, was the first international director I have met. It was with great sorrow that I heard the news of his death in Latvia, after he suffered from Covid-19. His films had great quality. If memory serves me right, it was in 2013 when I first heard his name. Initially, it sounded like a fruit to me. However, the buzz made in  The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) made me to go to the theatre to watch his film.

It was overflowing with so many people that I thought of going back after seeing the crowd. Thanks to my friend who was volunteering, I somehow managed a seat and watched Spring, Summer, Fall,Winter… and Spring. The Korean film was beautiful, it’s the story of life and the circle of sin. I fell in love with the director.

Pruthvi Ambaar turns singer for Life is Beautiful

Dia actor Pruthvi Ambar is now making his singing debut in his upcoming film, Life is Beautiful. Penned by Madan Bellisalu, the “inspirational” song is composed by Nobin Paul.

Pruthvi, who credits Michael Jackson as his influence, reveals he is not a trained singer. However, the actor is an adept social singer, and has even sung for a Tulu music album.

According to the team, Pruthvi would often be seen singing the tune of this song with his own words, and they decided to make the actor sing the number. “Like how an actor takes several shots to perfect a scene, I did take several attempts and for over three hours to record the song. I had even requested the team to drop it if my voice and singing was not up to the mark. But the team loved it,” said Pruthvi.

The film features Priyanka Upendra in an important role as Caroline along with Lasya Nagaraj in the lead cast.
